Online therapy - is it right for me?

For a long time, therapy typically took place face-to-face in the same room as your therapist. Today, however, online therapy has become a common and convenient option for both individuals and couples.

Many clients start online sessions with some reservations.  Will it work as effectively as in-person therapy? Can I develop a deeply trusting relationship with a therapist that I haven’t met in person?  Is it appropriate for my complex issues? They quickly discover that online therapy not only offers a very similar range of experiences and success as in-person work, but that it has some unique benefits in addition.

The benefits of online therapy

Online therapy offers flexibility and accessibility. If you have a busy schedule, live in a rural area, or find travel difficult and expensive, being able to log in from home removes a huge barrier to getting help.

It also allows for continuity of care — even if you move house, travel for work, or have health limitations, your sessions can continue without interruption.

Many of my clients say they find it easier to open up from the comfort of their own space. The screen can provide a gentle sense of safety, especially when talking about painful emotions. Clients struggling with social anxiety or trauma issues have particularly benefited from the extra feeling of security and safety that online therapy offers them.

If you’re curious about how it works, you can read more about my online therapy sessions and how we create a private, calming space for your sessions.

What Really Matters

The success of therapy isn’t determined by the medium — it’s shaped by the relationship between you and your therapist. Research from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) consistently shows that a strong therapeutic bond predicts positive outcomes, whether sessions happen online or in person.

If you feel heard, respected, and safe, therapy works. It’s that simple.
